NicOx SA co-founder and Chairman of its Scientific Advisory Board from 1996-2003; helped in the development and characterization of nitric oxide (NO) donating nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NO-NSAIDs) and several other types of NO-releasing drugs. His research into the causes of ulcers in individuals using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) delivered critical insight into ulcer prevention and, in addition, showed that delivery of nitric oxide (NO) in physiological concentrations could prevent NSAID-induced ulcers;
Holds more than 35 patents covering diagnostic tests for intestinal ulcers, and for novel anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs;
President of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology from 2000-2002;
PhD in Medical Sciences (University of Toronto); M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Biological Sciences (Queen’s University); post-doctoral studies at the Wellcome Research Laboratories in London, England; MBA (University of Birmingham, UK);
Published over 400 scientific articles and has received numerous awards, including: Canada Research Chair in Inflammation, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada Chair in Intestinal Disease Research, Gaddum Memorial Award from the British Pharmacological Society, Michael Smith Award of Excellence from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Physiological Society, Research Excellence Award from the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and the Merck-Frosst Prize from the Pharmacological Society of Canada;

Has made internationally-recognized contributions to the field of mucosal pathophysiology, with a particular emphasis on pulmonary and gastrointestinal disorders caused by microbial pathogens;
Holds 15 patents, applying primarily to innovations in methods that improve gastrointestinal health;
Has been a scientific advisor for 14 international, national, and provincial research councils, and sits on the board of directors of two companies;
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (London, UK);
Published over 100 articles in top international journals, book chapters; and delivered over 100 invited presentations throughout the world in the past 10 years;
Ph.D. in Pathophysiology of Infectious Disease, M.Sc. in Parasitology (University of Calgary);
